Statement

By

 Ambassador Ali Bahreini

Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva

 Before

The Human Rights Council

56th Session

Item 2: Presentation of Report on the Islamic Republic of Iran

Geneva, 20 June 2024

بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم

Mr. President,

The Islamic Republic of Iran reiterates its principled opposition to selective approaches in Human Rights Council that are miserably coincided with falsified and inauthentic reports of mechanisms maligned by political dockets.

We follow a stern position that pursuit of such prejudicial approaches either in Human Rights Council or General Assembly have nothing to do with promotion and protection of human rights, and even, are insidiously detrimental to the credibility of human rights values and structures.

It is transpired by experience that, the genuine promotion of human rights can be attained and secured by cooperation, not confrontation, and a fine-tuned approach requires dignified succor and exchange of experiences, not structural demolition and humiliation.

   Mr. president,

Believing on beneficences of constructive interaction and cooperation, the Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to enhance cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner, and has followed a path of continuous engagement with treaty bodies and UPR mechanism. In this regard, Iran will appear in August before the Committee on Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination to elucidate its related exponential efforts and explicate challenges ahead.  Iran is also determined to actively participate in the 48th session of the UPR working group, to turbocharge this fair and non-political mechanism.

Mr. President,

The Unilateral coercive measures and illegal sanctions are adversely affecting the enjoyment of different kinds of human rights in Iran. During the past decades, Iranians were hugely deprived from their economic, social and cultural rights due to the direct or indirect impacts of illegal sanctions.  The imposition

of the UCMs widely and negatively affect each part and parcel of the life of the Iranians from their right to enjoy a decent life to benefiting from advanced science and technology. It is a matter of deep concern that human rights monitoring mechanisms that have been established on the name of human rights against Iran, are meaningfully stifled and suffocated to deal with this important issue.

While bearing the burden of huge illegal Sanctions, Iran is hosting millions of migrants and refugees mostly from neighboring countries, and generously shares its belongings with them that includes provision of free educational services to 700 thousand students, and a wide range of free health insurances for vulnerable and low income families.

Mr. President,

While abolition of the death penalty is not supported by any global consensus, the Islamic Republic of Iran is implementing this punishment only for very serious crimes such as murder, major drug trafficking and terrorist crimes that endanger the security of the community as a whole. In this regard, many efforts have been made to reduce the scope and number of executions with an implementation of different legal, social and economic methodologies.

In conclusion, I reiterate that the Islamic Republic of Iran adheres responsibly to its commitments and obligations within the framework of international laws and regulations and is committed to promote and protect human rights with considerable respect to its cultural and social structure. Respecting the rule of law and democracy, Iran is now gearing up for the next presidential election that will take place next week on 28 June and will prove once again after its revolution in 1979 that the voice of its people will be the first and the last variant in determining its destiny.

 Thank you.
