on the International Day to Combat Islamophobia

Geneva, 17 March 2023 –

Room XXV

بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم

 Director General United Office Geneva

Distinguished participants,

The Islamic Republic of Iran associates itself with statement delivered by Pakistan on behalf of the OIC;

 I would like to thank the OIC Observer Mission in Geneva for organizing this important event to commemorate the first International Day to combat Islamophobia and also wish to thank DG UNOG for her message and support.

We welcome the adoption of GA resolution 76/254 “International Day to Combat Islamophobia” on 15 March 2022.

“Islamophobia” may be defined as an inexplicable and illogical fear of Islam’s presence and expansion in pre-dominantly non-Muslim societies.

This exaggerated fear of Islam is coupled with, and mutually reinforced by, hatred and hostility toward whoever is regarded to appear to be Muslim as well as Islamic symbols.

This mixed feeling of fear and hatred is perpetuated by negative stereotyping and stigmatization of Muslims and increasingly result in discrimination and exclusion of Muslims from socio-political and civic life and more alarmingly in verbal harassment and physical violence against them in the host communities;

Islamophobia is a form of bigotry and discrimination that can have serious consequences for individuals and communities.

It can lead to feelings of fear, anxiety, and isolation among Muslims, and can contribute to a climate of intolerance and hostility.

It is important for individuals and institutions to actively work to counter Islamophobia and promote understanding and respect for diversity.

Combating Islamophobia and discriminations against Muslims are achievable through education, dialogue, addressing stereotypes and legislation sustained effort from individuals and institutions at all levels of society.

Director General United Office Geneva

Distinguished participants,

We recognize that the freedom of speech is a fundamental right that allows individuals to express their opinions and ideas freely and without fear.

However, this freedom also carries certain responsibilities in accordance with international human rights instruments, including the need to avoid spreading hate speech or inciting violence.

It is important to recognize that Islamophobia or any other actions against Muslim’s symbols is not a legitimate form of expression, but rather a form of prejudice that can cause harm.

While individuals have the right to express their opinions and beliefs, they must also respect the rights and dignity of others.

This means avoiding hate speech and discriminatory language that can contribute to Islamophobia.

The freedom of speech is an important right but it should not be used as an excuse to spread hate speech or promote bigotry and discrimination.

We should always strive to promote respectful and inclusive dialogue that values diversity and respects the rights and dignity of all individuals and communities.

I thank you!
