Mr. President,
The Islamic Republic of Iran associates itself with the statement delivered on behalf of the OIC;
It is matter of concern that in past decades, religious-based hatred has persistently surged, fueling systemic prejudice, provoking animosity, and even escalating into violence, aiding extremists in forging prosperous political paths and legitimizing hate as official national agendas.
International law has provided a solid foundation for combating any actions leading to religious hatred, animosity, and discrimination by legal deterance, leaving no void in this area.
States can enact laws based on international law to combat any acts of dececration of holy books including Holy Quran,
In many countries that are unwilling to establish legal deterrence prohibiting the desecration of holy books and symbols, laws have been put in place regarding certain historical phenomena. Thus, any expression that involves rejection, criticism, or questioning of these phenomena is prohibited. In cases where such actions are taken, the strictest penalties will be imposed.
Legaliztion of freedom of expression is not about stifling this right, but rather ensuring that freedom of expression does not escalate into actions that harm individuals or communities.
In conclusion, the Islamic Republic of Iran once again condemns any act of dececration of Holy Quran and is of the view that the legalization of freedom of expression is a cornerstone for building more inclusive, tolerant societies, where differences are respected.
