The background of East Azerbaijan returns to the rule of the Medes. This land is changing over and over again, as we know today. In 1316, large parts of East Azarbaijan, along with Astara and Ardebil as the third province of Iran, were named after the Eastern Azerbaijan. Later, the city of Astara and its functions were separated from this province, and the city of Maragheh joined the West Bank. In 1993, with the separation of Ardebil and the formation of a new province, East Azarbaijan Province was identified with the present borders.
