Before

62nd Meeting of STANDING COMMITTEE ON Ramsar Convention -

Gland, Switzerland, 4 September 2023

Mr. Chairman,

Secretary General,

Distinguished delegates,

ladies and gentlemen,

On behalf of the Islamic Republic of Iran, I would like to extend our profound gratitude to the governments of the People's Republic of China and the Swiss Confederation for their extraordinary efforts in co-hosting the 14th Conference of the Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

Furthermore, we wish to convey our sincere gratitude to the Ramsar Convention Secretariat for their invaluable contributions in meticulously preparing and orchestrating the proceedings of the 62nd standing committee. Their unwavering dedication and meticulous work are pivotal in advancing our shared objectives of wetland conservation and environmental protection.

As we embark upon the 62nd standing committee of the Ramsar Convention, we extend our heartfelt best wishes for its continued success. The significance of wetlands cannot be overstated, particularly in a world where the adverse impacts of climate change are increasingly evident. Wetlands, often referred to as the "Earth's kidneys," play a pivotal role in maintaining ecological equilibrium. They function as natural sponges, absorbing excess rainfall, mitigating the risk of floods, and effectively filtering pollutants. These critical ecosystems offer protection not only to the environment but also to vulnerable communities, particularly in developing nations.

It is paramount to acknowledge that climate change knows no geographical bounds; it affects nations across the globe. Regrettably, it is frequently the developing countries and those subjected to unjustified and illegal unilateral coercive measures, including unilateral sanctions, as in the case of Iran, that bear the brunt of these environmental challenges. Such sanctions can severely impede a government's capacity to invest in sustainable practices, acquire advanced technologies, and effectively address the adverse consequences of climate change.

Therefore, we earnestly implore the international community to unite and explore pathways to exempt climate change-related matters, including financing and technology transfer, from unilateral sanctions. It is incumbent upon us to prioritize the preservation of our planet above political divergences and endeavor collectively to combat the repercussions of climate change.

In this era of intricate global interdependence, let us labor harmoniously to safeguard our wetlands, our environment, and the well-being of all nations. Collectively, we have the power to forge a sustainable future for generations to come.

With the deepest appreciation and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of our planet.

I thank you.
