Persian Gulf as the historical Identity-making name
-
Iranians mark the Persian Gulf Day on the 30th of April to celebrate the history, name, and significance of the Persian Gulf .The date coincides with the anniversary of a successful military campaign by Persia in 1622, which drove the Portuguese navy out of the Strait of Hormuz It is an undisputable historical fact that the full nomenclature Presian Gulf has always been used as the standard geographical nomenclature for the water body between Arabian peninsula and Iran. Countless historical maps testify to this point. The UN practice and documents has made it crystal clear that the term Persian Gulf is the only geographical designation applicble to the body of water between Arabian peninsula and Iran, and it should be used in the UN official documents. Refrence is made to ST/CS/SER.A/29/Add.2 The Persian Gulf is a historical identity-building name for a historical and strategic body of water that has given a cultural, historical, and cognitive identity to this region through this name. The Persian Gulf belongs to thousands of years of history, culture, and identity of the people of this region and all those who have lived in this place from the farthest and oldest historical point as well as to all those who today have valuable cultural roots in this historical depth; all aspects of this valuable human heritage must be preserved by the people of this region.
